The emphasis of the REG progression is to build a strong technical foundation securing each of the three primary fundamental skill groups. These skill groups include: position-specific movement, basic positioning and a goalie's initial save assets. Strength in these critical areas will ensure expedited growth due to the strength of the fundamental base.
ON-ICE PROGRAM [Back to top]
Each on-ice session will have a strong focus on a goalie's movement game. This emphasis is due to the importance of this fundamental skill group. Strong movement leads to greater positional efficiency, which, in turn, leads to more controlled and consistent save response. This progressive, downstream effect is the primary objective of this program. A further impact of this fundamental focus is the increase in confidence that the younger/beginner-level goaltender receives from growth in these areas. While movement is the focus, the goalie will build strong basic positioning and the ability to execute key save moves.
OFF-ICE PROGRAM [Back to top]
In GDI's REG progression, goalies are introduced to the wide range of requirements for the position. A hallmark of GDI programming is a balanced approach between technical, physiological and psychological development. The REG1 progression is no different. In an atmosphere of fun but demanding activity, the goalie will be introduced to athletic, age-appropriate training. On the mental front, goalies will be familiarized with some of the many challenges that face one of sports most demanding positions.
BENEFITS [Back to top]
Graduates will be able to demonstrate:
- Improved edge control
- More efficient and controlled position-specific movement skills
- Positionally, goalies will be more accurate in angle and depth selections
- Controlled down save movements with a corresponding improvement in post-save response
