Dan's brother, Sylvain, is a centre in the New Jersey Devils' farm system.
On October 18, 2000, Dan lost a National Hockey League game without facing a single shot on net. With 1:46 remaining in a contest between Dan's Tampa Bay Lightning and the Minnesota Wild, and the Lightning down, 5-4, Dan replaced starter Kevin Weekes and was then pulled for an extra skater. Minnesota's Marian Gaborik scored into the vacant Tampa net with 58 seconds remaining. Forty seconds later, Tampa Bay's Fredrik Modin scored to make the final 6-5, Minnesota. Since the sixth (and winning) Minnesota goal was scored while Cloutier was the goalie of record, he received the loss.
On December 11, 2002, Dan was the goaltender who allowed Joe Sakic's 500th career National Hockey League goal.
Until the fall of 2006, Dan wore the old-style helmet/cage combination. Upon joining the Los Angeles Kings, Cloutier switched to the more common fitted facemask. According to Cloutier, he was encouraged/urged by the Kings to switch for safety reasons.
